If you are interested in the rules of bankruptcy cases, the Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure can inform you about the entire proceeding starting with the filing of a petition. The language of these rules is very dense and full of legalese, however.
Title 11 of the United States Code contains the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and you can download it in its entirety at this link. Individual chapters such as Chapter 13 wage earners plans or Chapter 7 liquidation at this link to U.S. House of Representatives are also available.
The State Bar of California provides a consumer information pamphlet titled “What Can I Do If I Can’t Pay My Debts,” and the link for it can be found here.

Resources for Credit and Debt Information
In 2009, the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act (CARD) resulted in major changes in the ways credit card companies disclose information about interest rates and other terms on your bill. A summary of those requirements is provided by the Federal Reserve here.
Creditor harassment and the behavior of bill collectors are governed by the Federal Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) enforces the FCDPA and you can find more information on debt collection here.
You are legally entitled to a one free copy of your credit report from the three major consumer credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) each year. A good strategy to keep your credit report accurate is to request a report from a different agency every four months. This allows you to monitor your credit report regularly for inaccuracies and old information. The official site for obtaining free credit reports is AnnualCreditReport.com.
